Vero2

Hi friends

I have another pattern to share with you today. Two actually, because it’s a set! The Vero Beach Set is a hoodie and shorts set. The patterns are for woven fabrics and can be made in a range of fabrics from fabrics with drape such as rayon to fabrics with structure like chambray or twill. The Vero Hoodie is a slightly cropped, long sleeved hoodie with a large kangaroo pocket. the sleeves are wide and long and the hoodie has a relaxed boxy fit making it perfect to layer over swim suits or tank tops.

And the shorts are your perfect summer elastic waist shorts with front slant pockets and back pockets and a cute tulip hem. The shorts are fitted at the hip, have a low to mid front-rise as well as darts in the back to reduce gathering bulk. Despite its simplicity, it’s a well thought out pattern that is drafted brilliantly and sews up well 🙂

The pattern comes in sizes 0-24 with detailed instructions to modify fit and length. Instructions for basic adjustments and alterations, performing a FBA, as well as lots of sewing tips for picking fabrics are all included. Since it’s a boxy top, picking a size and making sure it fits you right is pretty straightforward. Based on my upper bust measurement (32″), I made size 2. I shortened it by 1/2” because that’s my standard alteration for most HJ patterns. I also shortened the sleeves by 2” another common adjustment for me. You can make both these adjustments after sewing your hoodie as well.

I was having some camera and lighting issues so ended up taking pictures on two different days and styling them differently.

The hoodie fabric is a batik print cotton that feels like gauze. It’s really soft and sheer and feels amazing! In India, batik printed wrap skirts and tunics are typically sold in gift shops and street stalls on tourist beaches. So I was immediately drawn to this fabric (from my stash of course). I took great pride in matching the print on the placket and pocket and everything only to realize that those details are all completely lost now🤣 You’ll have to look really closely to find them. I promise you they’re there! Since the fabric was so thin, I used French seams for the entire construction. For the hood, I stitched the seam down so it looks like a flat felled seam.

For the shorts, I used a linen from my stash purchased from Joann’s a few years ago. It was such a small piece, I literally had fabric just enough for the shorts not even for the pocket facing. It was gratifying to be able to use up that small scrap of fabric.

Since these shorts fit similar to the Seaforths which I made earlier this month, I made the same alteration which was reducing both the front and back rise by 1/2” and that’s it. It fits great and is super comfortable.

These are only the second pair of shorts I have ever made in my life. I don’t usually wear shorts a lot. As much as I love how these turned out and how extremely comfortable they  feel, I am going to wear these a few times around before jumping in make more. Meanwhile I should probably make a couple hoodies for sun-protection for when I am running behind my kids bicycles 🙂 You can get the Vero Beach Set here and get loads of detailed information about fitting and picking the best size and fabric here and check out all the amazing tester versions for inspiration here.

  1. Indu, I love how gorgeous this batik is! And paired with the brown shorts was perfect. How am I only now noticing the pom pom sandals – so cute! And make at least another pair of shorts, even if it’s just to sleep in.
