Today, I want to quickly share one of my recent sewing projects, the Pine Cove Pajamas by Itch to Stitch Patterns. Every year, as soon as December approaches, I am careful not to commit to sewing pattern tests or blog posts because there’s so much else going on during holiday season. This is usually the time I am sewing pajamas for both kids assembly line style. They wear them all winter long and it makes my heart glad to see them use them so thoroughly. Making pajamas for myself is however not an annual tradition. I have probably made about three pairs of pajamas for myself in all these years and that is including the one I am sharing with you today.

When Kennis put out the tester call for Pajamas a few weeks ago, I was almost not going to test but then realized that there’s nothing like a deadline to finally get me to sew some PJs for myself. Now, I too can finally have some decent looking pajamas. The Pine Cove Pajamas like all other itch to stitch patterns is well designed and beautifully constructed. It is designed for woven fabrics such as flannel, silk, satin, double gauze, broadcloth, chambray and cotton lawn.

The hip-length pajama top has a relaxed fit with slits at the sides and a patch pocket. It features dropped shoulders and long sleeves. Instead of the usual collar and button placket, this pattern has a banded overlapped front with ties as closures which is not just a nice style but is also super quick to make. The pattern comes in the size range 00 to 40.

Another reason behind my hesitation to test this pattern was lack of the recommended type and amount of fabric. I have been really good this year not buying fabric every time I saw something I liked or every time there was a sale. So I was hoping to avoid buying any fabric. As I was going through my stash wondering what I could use, I came across these sheets that my mom-in-law got for me from India when they last visited us. The fabric is a premium quality cotton poplin that is really really wide. It has been washed a few times so it’s incredibly soft. I like how delicate and feminine the print is with all the branches and blossoms.

Based on my hip size (36″), I made a size 2 for the pants. Having just made the Fortuna joggers, I followed the same fit modifications which were shortening the rise by 1/2″, shortening at the lengthen/shorten line by 3.5″ and at the hem by 1.5″ and the inseam length is just perfect. For the pajama top, I blended from a 0 (my bust measurement is 32″) at the bust to 2 at the hips. I also shortened the bodice by 1″ and the sleeves by 2″.

The construction of this pajama set is pretty quick and easy. Considering how there’s no traditional collar or button placket, once the bodice is constructed and the banded collar is attached, all that is left to do is hem the top and it is ready to be worn. I really like the little side slit detail on them.

I love how these Pajamas turned out and I love how these soothing colors, the buds and the blooms and the sturdy yet delicate branches in this fabric reflect my feelings and choices this season. And I hope that they will serve to remind me of how this year has taught me so many things but most of all to appreciate the things I do have.
