I made overalls!!! what?!!! I can’t even believe it! I can’t decide what’s more shocking, the fact that I made overalls or that I actually love wearing them!

I have a good reason for not venturing into the overalls department earlier and that was because only cool people sported them which I am not! Also, being only 5′ tall (short?), I have some weird prejudices of what might or might not look good on my frame. But, all apprehensions were cast aside when I saw Adrianna’s email and it took me all of 5 seconds to respond with a “why yes I would love to test the Kendrick Overalls pattern”. One, I LOVE Hey June patterns, two, the patterns are spectacularly drafted and three, Hey June pattern styles are just classic. So, I had to give it a go. Now this is me trying to get on board with new-to-me styles like overalls and high-waisted wide leg pants which I’m suddenly obsessed with! who knew?!

The Kendrick Overalls which comes in sizes 2 – 20, are high-waisted wide leg pants in cropped length or fitted pencil style skirt in knee length with V- shaped front and back straps. Both views feature optional curved pockets, hip and back patch pockets, belt loops, a zip fly, and slide hardware. And both views can be made as pants or skirt without the straps with no additional alterations required.

For my pants version, I used a thick (11 oz.) non-stretch denim from my local Joanns. While I love this dark wash denim, my poor singer machine didn’t love how thick it was and refused to do belt loops. But otherwise, I sewed these up with no major hiccups not counting the two days it took me to decide on the final cropped length.

The pattern includes great fitting instructions and help to address general fit issues. Based on the finished inseam length, I shortened the pants by 3″, did a 3/4″ petite adjustment in the back and took in the waist and hips by 1/2″ and that’s it!

I love how these overalls turned out, love the cropped length, love how they fit, and also in love with this style now!!! This occasion called for a new striped tee and I complied with a crew neck Union St. tee in striped jersey from Hobby Lobby.

Obviously, I had to also try the skirt version and this time I used a stretch denim from Simply by Ti fabrics. I chose to skip the patch pockets and did the curved pockets for the skirt as well. A petite adjustment in the back, larger seam allowances through the waist and hips, and shortening the skirt length by 1″ were all the adjustments this version needed.

The skirt features some beautiful topstitched details like a wide hem and front slit and the shape of the skirt itself is quite flattering. I paired this with an old and loved rayon spandex Union st. tee here but I can’t wait to layer it with turtle neck tees, tights and cardigans for fall and winter.
